Week 1, July 11 - July 15
Puzzles and Puters
Computers and Images: Students will explore the relationships of numbers and shapes and role of computers in visualizing the abstract. Hands-on activities in tessellation, building three-dimensional models of world of science, making buckeyballs are all possible. A trip to the computer lab to explore math in images and art and a field trip to the Lawrence Hall of Science will provide exciting experiences.

Week 2, July 18 - July 22
Water, Dirt and Air
Environment and Earth Science: Students will explore the earth beneath their feet. They will observe and study the composition of soil, rocks and sand. They will learn how wind and water shape the earth and how rivers, deltas and lakes are created through hands-on activities. They will see the effects of earthquakes on the ground. They can collect data on a nature hike or visit the beach. A visit to Lawrence Hall of Science will include the forces that shape the bay and a seismograph. Also may visit the Black Diamond Mines.

Week 3, July 25 - July 29
Seeing through a Lens
Telescopes to microscopes: Students will explore the world around them through microscopes and telescopes. They will be encouraged to observe the sky and record the path of the sun and moon. They will build their own telescope and test it. A visit to the Chabot Observatory and Science Center will introduce them to the solar system and stars. A visit to the Berkeley Lab National Center for Electron Microscopy will open the door to seeing atoms.

Week 4, August 1 - August 5
Doctor's World
Health and medicine: Students will explore human biology and the effects of good nutrition. A visit to the Hall of Health in Berkeley will help them learn how the body works and their responsibility for healthiness. "The Hall of Health is dedicated to promoting wellness... Its interactive, hands-on exhibits to learn about the workings of the body, the value of sound diet and exercise."
|
Week 5, August 8 - August 12
Putting it all Together
Integrated Science: Students will explore the meanings to scientific topics such as what "matter" is, nanotechnology, and the functions of conductors and insulators. They will visit the San Francisco Exploratorium for a fun-filled day of science exhibits and interactive, hands-on activities.
|
Week 6, August 15 - August 19
Earth, Wind and Fire
Energy and Environment: Students will explore both physics and chemistry of energy and the impact of energy resources on the environment. They will learn how energy is transferred in heat, light and sound through hands-on activities. They will learn how scentists seek to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and also visit to the Berkeley Lab's windows and lighting energy efficiency laboratories. A trip to the Exploratorium is planned.
